Big fish, small Pond

Grade school: 26 classmates.
High School: 99 classmates.
College: starting 755, graduating 348 classmates, 23 from my discipline.
Masters: 122 classmates, 8 from my discipline.
PhD: 6,500 other grad students, 20 classmates in my cohort, 35,000 undergrads.

Up until my PhD, I have been living in a few small ponds. My class sizes in grade school were larger than my college and master’s degree class sizes. There were a few classes where there would be six students and one professor. They knew us by name, details about my life, my goals, what professors I was working with, etc. They knew me. I was never so thankful for that support and personal attention until I attended my first few days of my PhD. Sure, most of my classes are 15-18 students, but as a whole, this university is HUGE! There are people everywhere, all the time. Here, they ask me what my student number is (which I have no clue) almost daily. Here, I have to chase people down for registration, enrollment, grant/ stipend issues. And because everyone is so busy, you are not a priority. “They will get to it.” It is one of the most frustrating things to encounter. Case and point, two weeks ago I realized that I was not enrolled in the classes I registered for. As it turned out, the cashiers department put a hold on my account because I had an outstanding balance. Now the great thing about getting a PhD is that it’s free. No tuition or incidentals comes out of my pocket, my grant and fellowship pays for it. So this outstanding balance had nothing to do with me but with the administration of my department. After daily emails and even a few meetings, my paperwork was being continually passed around. No one knew who to talk with so that my issue was fixed. It was now a few days before class was to begin. Again, I continually followed up, “just checking to see what the status is….” The response “so and so has to sign off on it, then so and so has to enter it in the system.” Very. Frustrating. Today, the first day of the semester, I was still not enrolled in my classes. Five hours of badgering phone calls, meetings, emails. I am finally enrolled in my classes, the balance is paid, the hold is removed. I profusely thanked those who actually assisted me in getting this taken care. Something that should never have happened in the first place. But every phone call, every email, there was never “hi, what can I help you with?” Nope, I got “what’s your student number” as my greeting. The beauty of being a ‘big fish in a small pond’, is that relationship, that personal and personable relationship. And I understand readers will think, “oh, you chose a big school.” Yes, I chose the program and the benefits of a government position. Because I know that in the long run, being a small fish in a big pond is only temporary.  That working at CERC allows me to still be a big fish in a small pond. And I know that I am my strongest advocate, and badgering and probably being downright annoying got things accomplished. So I guess my takeaway from my last two weeks is, make sure you are a big fish in your own pond, and remind everyone in the big ponds that you are a freaking largemouth bass.

Marc Jacobs Polish Review

Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Nail Lacquer in Madame.

I got this nail polish in a gift set from Sephora for Christmas. First of all, I am not a 'splurge on your nail polish' kind of girl. I am perfectly content picking up one of the 99 cent baby polishes from Sally's Beauty Supply. But periodically I will break down and buy an Essie or OPI. I finally get what all the hype is about. From the application, the color, and the lasting power of this polish, I have been blown away. I love the way it looks so effortlessly chic and classic. I couldn't be more thrilled! Yes, it is pricey, but it is definitely worth it. I have had two coats of on for two weeks with little to no chipping. Most of my polishes are cracked and rough looking at two weeks. I work a lot with my hands so I know that if a polish can survive two weeks- it's a keeper. So if you are in the market to buy a new 'nude', check out the Marc Jacobs line.

What I'm Reading..

Picture Above and Below: a bit of my book collection

I normally read or reread between 4-6 books a month, give or take depending. After reading The Fault in Our Stars, I was so distraught and traumatized, I didn't read for a few weeks. I was in a book coma. I have always loved reading. My version of Disney Land is spending hours in Barnes and Noble. I was reading books on my own at 3 (my brother at 5 was learning to read and I wanted to do everything he did). I didn't seriously start reading novels until around 8. I remember the first time I discovered romance novels. My mom had a collection of historical romance novels under the sink in my parents bathroom. I read my first one and was instantly hooked. If you have never read historical romance or romance in general, it is nothing like 50 Shades of Grey. There is no bondage or dominance/submission. It is always a strong female character and always a happy ending. I also read other genres, but I mostly stick to romance and chick lit fiction. I NEED the closure. Books are a great way for me to escape the day to day craziness. I probably won't cover my romance novels because the genre makes some people uncomfortable but a few of my favorite authors are Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Christina Feehan, Nora Roberts.

What I am reading now..

What I bought today to read next.

What I just finished (+ four other books)

kind of slow starting, then at the end it was awesome!
Quotes from Chaos of Stars..

Enjoy reading!

Winter Skin Care

As much as I adore winter, the snow, and freezing cold; I dread the dry skin that comes along with it. I already have dry skin so the windy cool temperatures (sometimes in the single digits) do not bode well with sensitive skin. After each shower, I immediately put Cetaphil Intensive Moisturizing lotion on my legs and arms. Last night, I had to apply twice because I could still feel how tight and dry my shins were. I also know that I am not helping myself with my hot showers- drying my skin out even more- but come on, it’s so cold outside! I recently picked up a few skin care items and lotions for the winter knowing that my late spring to early fall routine just doesn't cut it. I normally up the moisture and use less powders and more creams. I wanted to share some of my winter favorites and current winter skin care routine.

Favorite Body Lotions

Current Skin Care Routine

I am currently using the Clean and Clear Makeup dissolving facial cleansing wipes
I also go back with my Clinique makeup remover to get rid of any residual eyeliner or mascara

I wash my face morning and night with Murad Clarifying Cleanser
If I am home on the weekends I usually use "Say Yes to Tomatoes" daily face scrub

Toner- I only use my toner at night
Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner

Repair Serum- I only use this at night
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair

My daytime and nighttime moisturizers
Estee Lauder Advanced Time Zone and Time Zone Night

Treatment

Any spots or acne issues, I use a q-tip to apply some tea tree oil. I get mine from Trader Joes. Strong scent but really works well reducing swelling, redness, and its antibacterial properties help treat

Shower Skin Essentials
Both Alba products are great! I use the toxin release scrub after washing my face with my regular cleanser. I tend to leave the scrub on for a minute or two before washing it off. Then I apply the mini peel and it really tightens my skin. I make sure to moisturize right after getting out of the shower.

What are you winter skin essentials?
Stay warm!

New Years Day Haul

Every year my mom, sister, and I get up early to hit up the Dillard's New Years Day sale. It's always an additional 50-60% off all clearance. Thankfully Dillard's doesn't open until 10 a.m. on New Years Day so it's not as painful, but I get a huge adrenaline rush from the crowd and the craziness. I always score amazing deals too! I have gotten full luggage sets for a fraction of the price, new kitchen appliances and dishware, etc. My mom picked up a temperpedic for my parent's bed, originally $340, she got it for $75.  I love this sale! I got three new pairs of boots and a bedding set for my room at my parents. It was overall a very successful trip. This year, S came along. Poor guy. He hit his quota of boyfriend duties and won't have to repeat it, although his mother wants to join now. And my sister in law will be in town next year so we should have quite the group. It's a lot of fun. But here are some of my new purchases. I got all brown boots because I have so many black. And I needed little to no heal since I am in the lab in these boots. I have worn each pair already- LOVE THEM. Thank you Dillard's for yet another crazy, wild, and totally worth it shopping experience.
Montana Smoky Casual Boot-  I got them in a very light grey/ brown

Lucky Brand Heston2 Tall Wide Calf Boots

I will be showing my new bedding set when my room is repainted and finished. I have always wanted to do a plaid bedroom so I am beyond excited. Winter is my favorite time of year, I have a slight obsession with plaids and stripes, see my Pinterest. but here is a tiny sneak peak of my plaid bedding

Next year! See y'all at the New Years day sale! I will be the one fighting ppl in the front of the line. Just kidding. But seriously..

Happy New Year!

I have never been much of a New Years resolutions kind of girl. But apparently everyone else in the world is. All I have to do is go on any social media network to read all about my friends lofty resolutions ie. hit the gym, cut out soda, etc. Maybe I am a little pessimistic or realistic. Ok, probably. But the people that make a resolution to go to the gym, just take up all the machines in January and quit by February. Save us all the trouble and just go to the bar instead. I guess I feel like if you are going to make a change, do it. Don't wait for New Years, Lent, etc to make a change. I started drinking more water about two months ago. I decided I needed to up my water intake. I was drinking way too much coffee, soda, etc. and not enough water. I was dehydrating myself and my body was paying the price. I definitely struggle with making a conscious effort to drink an extra bottle or two of water each day. But when I do, I can tell a difference in my energy, my skin, and overall health. So I guess if I HAD to make a resolution, it is to drink more water, even if I had a little bit of a headstart.

Take your weight divide it into two- that's how many ounces you should drink.
Or you can divide that number by 8, that's how many glasses you should drink.

Happy 2015!!
